In 2010, I preached a topical sermon series on suffering. The feedback I received from the congregation helped me realize how much biblical teaching on this subject is truly needed. Every year since, I have committed to preach at least one sermon each year on suffering. When preparing for that first series back in 2010, D.A. Carson’s advice encouraged me in this practice. He said that hearing biblical truths on suffering prior to suffering was much easier than hearing the truths in the midst of trial (my paraphrase). In essence, Christians need a good biblical foundation. I’m not kidding myself, I know that even one sermon a year is not enough to accomplish that outcome. Therefore, I would encourage you to pick one or more of the following books and study, perhaps with a friend.
How Long O Lord?: Reflection on Suffering and Evil by D.A. Carson
Surprised by Suffering by R.C. Sproul
Walking with God through Pain and Suffering by Tim Keller
Is God Really in Control by Jerry Bridges
Trusting God: Even When Life Hurts by Jerry Bridges
Suffering and the Sovereignty of God by John Piper and Justin Taylor
