Humble and Selfless

This week I read through Sam Allberry’s little book, “Why Bother with church?”. As is par for the course, I enjoyed and benefited from Allberry’s exposition and application of Scripture. I wanted to share a quick note from the book. He offers a brief, but punchy, statement on Hebrews 10:24-25. The passage reads:

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. (ESV)

If we ignore this verse and neglect the local church, Allberry says we are being both arrogant and selfish. Neglecting the church displays an attitude that arrogantly says:

I can manage without the encouragement that God wants to provide me with through the local church. (pg. 34)

It also “quite selfish(ly)” says:

I won’t encourage those in my local church. (pg. 34)

I pray we are a church that, instead of being arrogant and selfish, is humble and selfless. (Phil. 2:1-11)
